A visual UX video product contributed to a reflection session for people.

Overview

Many girls experienced verbal sexual harassment in school. These words damage their mental health and build up a breast stigma for the rest of their life.
 

What will the boys reflect, after directly seeing the harm they gave to girls?

Nationawide, 81% of women reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime.

Girls have a higher prevalance rates compared with boys in the same age group.

The prevalance rates of sexual harassments reach the highest point at age 15. They fastly rise during puberty.

Interview

I remember that it was 8th grade. At that time, girls began to wear bra normally. If you want to wear a bra with a darker color, or even a red one, they will keep saying that her underwear is red, and then there are boys who like to play or pull on girls' underwear belts.

When I recall that in junior high school, the boys in our class had a discussion about the color of girls' underwear, which I thought was quite uncomfortable. That was very personal. My male friend told me that he saw what color other girls’ underwear made me feel disgusted.

I went to a boarding school in junior high school. My best girl friend at that time grew up early. Then the boy would call her a Milky mom and made fun of her. At 9th grade, she seemed completely did not care the name. She even made jokes with the boys using it. I guess she just let it go.

Tenzin

Ideation

The target population is young male group. Most of the girls I interviewed all suggested the fact of peer sexual harassments that they experienced in school is urgent and serious.

 

Not only the girls need to realize they do not need to go through sexual harassments in any forms, but also the boys have to think how girls are hurted and affected by those unacceptable behaviors.

 

The final product provides an opportunity for them experiencing what the girls go through and cast around for possible damages.

Materials & Preparations
Female mannequin

The female mannequin will be wore a bra and school uniform to represent what the girls wear in the real life in school.

Speaker

Words that were said by boys describing girls as “milky mom” and going to be presented. Combined with Chinese and English.

Markers

People will be asked to jog down their thoughts seeing the mannequin before hearing the words from the speaker and after on mannequin’s bra area.

School uniforms

Female school uniform would make the participants notice the time and place girls were offended by sexual harassments.

I decided to offer markers with thin pins to participants. Some people may pop the balloons. The sequins and hurtful words may explode in a flash.

The sequins exploded like a mind blast of girls who were attacked by sexual harrassments in school.

Think of ballons as girls’ breasts, it would be more comfortable for participants to write down their thoughts on ballons instead of the bra area of a female mannequin.

The words are what the boys said in the past.

The words

By replacing sequins with party powders, it brought a stronger visual effect to participants. Watching the ballon get exploded just like the experienceing the same pressure women suffer from sexual harrassments get released.
